The Lil House's Lighting Guide: Wall Sconces

Happy Monday! Today I thought i'd brighten up your Monday (pun intended) by sharing part two of my lighting guide. Sconces are another diverse fixture. They are a great option for any room because they can be mounted anywhere. Trust me, they don't just belong in the bathroom!

Thrifter's Remorse

Do you ever come home from thrifting and immediately regret not buying something? Ya, me too.

Today I came across this cabinet for $12... it would have made a cute bookshelf or bar:

I decided to leave it because it had a chip missing and someone had scribbled on the top in pen. Also it was laminate. BUT when I got home I realized that I could have filled in the chip and painted it and it would have been beautiful... I'm thinking I could have done something inspired by this:

I also came across a HBC blanket, which is the most quintessential Canadian item. They were selling it for $199 which is about half off of the retail price. I don't like the idea of thrifting blankets but then I saw this on Pinterest when I got home:

I'm definitely regretting the decisions I made today. Thrifter's remorse is a real thing guys.

The Lil House's Lighting Guide: Ceiling Pendants

When it comes to ceiling lights, I love pendants (I also LOVE chandeliers, but we will save that for a later date). There is such a diverse selection of pendants out there. Copper and gold pendants seem to be making a huge comeback, as are globe pendants. I remember having the UGLIEST globe pendant in my house in the 90's, but these beauties are in a whole new league. As much as I love mid century inspired ones, I still love farmhouse style pendants... I feel like they never go out of style! Anyways, I thought i'd kick off my lighting guide with ceiling pendants, so enjoy!

High Five For Friday

Happy friday and happy first day of spring! The weather this week has been fantastic so i've been in an excellent mood all week. It's amazing not having to wear my winter boots and parka outside anymore!

1. This week I celebrated spring by going to my favourite diner for ice cream. Of course I had cookie dough and cookies and cream ice cream.

2. I went for my first run of the year this week. It's still a little wet outside so my runners were soaked by the time I got home, but that's okay... i'd pick puddles over snow banks any day.

3. It's been a 'treat yo self' kind of week. I decided to buy myself some tulips. I also scored this vase at Superstore for $5!

4. I also bought new glasses this week... i'm waiting for them to come in so I don't have any pictures!

5. I just got Marina and the Diamonds' new album so I'll probably spend the weekend listening to it. I love Electra Heart so i'm hoping this one is equally as good!

I hope everyone has a great weekend and enjoys the first day of spring!

Redecorating Prep 101

Now that it's spring, i'm having a very difficult time resisting the urge to redecorate. It's been about 8 years since I painted my bedroom and while I still think it's pretty, I feel like it no longer represents who I am today. Your space should inspire you and mine no longer does that.

However, before I even think about getting my hands on a paint brush, preparations must be made. I thought i'd share with you, my tips for preparing to redecorate.

1. Rearrange your space.

Before you decide to invest money into a complete redo, try rearranging your furniture. It might just be the change that you need in your space.

2. Downsize.

A room feels so much newer and fresher when you get rid of the clutter that you no longer need. Plus, it makes way for new decor that could really set the tone in your new space. I make a sell pile and a donate pile when i'm downsizing. When i'm deciding if I should keep something, I ask myself:

"Does this item have a purpose/ serve it's purpose?"
"Do I still love this item as much as I did when I bought it?"
"Will I REALLY miss this item if I part with it?"

Questions like that... you get the picture.

3. Seek Inspiration Online.

This is an obvious one. Check out Pinterest, Instagram, Blogs! I have an embarrassing amount of photos saved onto my phone and computer of spaces that inspire me.

4. Go Window Shopping.

Whether it's online shopping or shopping in person, go out there and get inspired! I love going to fabric stores and thrift stores to find inspiration. Whether its a piece of fabric, a painting or a piece of furniture, a simple item can inspire a whole room.

5. Create a Vision.

This is where your window shopping and online inspiration collides. Create a mood board, Pinterest board, draw pictures, make lists! Let the creative juices flow. Or if you don't like to redecorate, go seek out a professional and bring your vision with you.

6. Pick up Paint Swatches & Samples.

You've probably done this already, but if you haven't, go to the paint store and get swatches. I like to tape different swatches to the wall and leave them there for a few days. Once i've decided on a colour (or even if i'm torn between a couple), I like to buy a sample pod and test it out. Colours always look totally different once they're on the wall. Don't be afraid to change your mind a few times too!

7. Create a Budget.

Whether it's a couple hundred dollars or a couple thousand, create a realistic budget before you dish out any money.

Your house/ space should be a reflection of your personality. If you aren't inspired by the vision that you've created, then tweak it until you love it! If you take your time, enjoy yourself and fun then your space will reflect that.

Top 5: Minted Limited Edition Art

I love Minted's art. It's my go to site for wall art. Minted features art from indie artists and designers, which is pretty cool. It's nice seeing so many unique designs. Plus you can buy the prints framed and you can preview your print in different frames, which is super convenient. From now until Monday, Minted is having their Spring Event, which means that the entire site is 15% off with the code: HAPPYSPRING. That means that you can get these prints at a steal of a deal. Here are a few of my favourites prints:

1. Reach by Carrie ONeal

(Seaside is my favourite, i've had it sitting in my shopping cart for quite some time now.. I will definitely be buying it during this sale!)

Thrifty Thursday

It feels like it's been ages since i've been antiquing. However, I had some time to kill downtown so it was the perfect opportunity to stop into my favourite antique store, The Old House.  I'm so glad I stopped in because I got a chance to look at these beautiful pieces.

Aren't they gorgeous? Shabby chic isn't even my style but I still wanted to take them home. If you live in Winnipeg, please go and buy those.

I also scouted out these cool lamps (sorry for the blurry pictures, it was SUPER sunny).

There were also two of these stools, which were super darling.

I somehow ended up buying this random bunny statue. Did I need it? I definitely did not.  But it was too cute to pass up.

Top 5: Favourite Instagrams

I love Instagram, I even love it more than Pinterest. Shocking, I know. I find Instagram so inspiring. I spend way too much time browsing the feeds of interior designers and decorators. While I have SO many favourite instagram accounts, I thought i'd share my top 5 favourite interior design related accounts.

1. Am I the only one who is obsessed with the show Fixer Upper? I love Joanna's style, so I was very happy to find her Instagram account.

(I have MAJOR heart eyes for this room)

2. Amanda Rydell constantly posts pictures of beautiful vintage sofas and chairs. Whenever I browse her Instagram, I want to spray paint every chair in sight.

3. I really love Danielle Oakey's colourful sense of style. Plus the girl LOVES Target and finding bargains.

4. I love when I come across Canadian accounts. Even if Brittany Robertson wasn't Canadian, i'd still follow her because she has such good taste. It also doesn't hurt that she has the prettiest kitchen.

5. Last but definitely not least is Holly from inthefunlane. Holly is another Canadian, and she probably has my favourite Instagram account. Her style is always so perfect. And she has lots of dogs, so that's pretty great too.

All these ladies are amazing so you should probably check their accounts out!

Mid Century Modern Living Room

Now that I have a new computer, I can finally use photoshop again (yay). Which means I can make E Designs! Today I went to The Bay and was inspired by their Mid Century furniture so I thought i'd put together a vibrant Mid Century Modern living room design. Enjoy!

The Travel Bug: Palm Springs

I have a REALLY bad case of the travel bug. All day at work, I have people telling me about their upcoming vacations to hot destinations and it KILLS me. There is nothing more I want to do than suntan and swim in a pool all day. One destination that I want to check out is Palm Springs. I've heard there isn't much to do there, but that's okay. I'm completely in love with the pictures that i've seen of it so I thought i'd share a few of my favourite ones. I mean midcentury modern architecture and colourfulness? What more could a girl want? It seems like the perfect weekend getaway to me. Also, i'm dying to stay at The Saguaro.

Ok ok, so when can I pack my bags??

The Lil House's Sofa Guide

I love a good sofa. I feel like having a stylish (non generic) sofa can really make a room special. I'm not saying that you have to dish out lots of money either, just avoid those typical cookie cutter sofas. And of course, before you go searching for a new sofa check out Kijiji or Craig's list... you might get lucky like Mandy did here. If you aren't good at finding bargains or if the thought of a used sofa grosses you out, i've compiled a guide of my favourite sofas for any budget!
