Furniture Redesign Plan: Kitchen Table

Yesterday I received my first "big" piece of furniture for my future place. Even though it is second hand, it is nice to have a kitchen table for when I decide to move out.

Here is a super terrible picture of the table and chairs in the midst of a move:

While it is a nice table, i'm not a huge fan of that colour of wood. I have two options to change the colour:

Option one- Sand/Strip the finish and then stain and varnish. Depending on my future place I could either go lighter or darker... i'm however leaning towards a light stain.

Option two- Chalk paint the entire table white and then wax it. Have you guys heard of chalk paint? I just discovered it last night and was up to 3am reading about it. It seems pretty amazing.  Some people do a light sand before applying the paint, however many just paint right onto the piece without sanding. The only thing that I wouldn't do is distress it, I just want a nice matte finish. I'm really interested in Annie Sloan chalk paint, however there are no stores in Winnipeg that sells the stuff (sad face). So I may just have to make my own... Pinterest has lots of different recipes for chalk paint.

The next part of my redesign plan is to recover the chair seats. I love white, however these seats are a little dingy and need some tlc. Last night I also discovered the amazing website Spoonflower (...it was a good night). I fell in love with this designer's fabrics.

Option one- Chevron Stripe Mint

Option two- Wild Ikat in Mint

Here are both of the fabrics in real life (SO ADORABLE):

I'll keep you guys updated on my table redesign and I would love to hear about your experiences with Chalk paint or Spoonflower!

Top 10: DIY Rugs

Finding the perfect rug for your space can be difficult and expensive at times (i'm still searching for the perfect rug for my bedroom...). Which is why, creating your own rug can sometimes be the best option! Here are my top ten DIY rugs:

1. DIY Rope Rug from Wholly Kao, which you can find here.

2. Of course my next two picks come from A Beautiful Mess. You can find this Braided Rope Rug here

3. They also featured this Latch Hook Rug here. This brought back memories from when I was in elementary and was obsessed with making those animal latch hook kits (are kids still into those these days?!). Anyways, I think this rug would look SUPER cute in grey and white.

4. Felt Ball Rugs are also super popular right now. I fell in love with Aileen from At Home in Love's felt ball rug made by feltballrug.com

You can find out how to make your own felt ball rug here.

5. Adventures of an almost 40 year old intern made this super awesome pink geometric rug. I would love to have this rug in my house... better yet i'd love to have this as my dining room.

6. The next rug comes from Honeybear Lane... this Faux Sheepskin Rug is a super easy project that requires zero sewing or painting.

7. Nellie Bellie made this super awesome Aztec print Drop cloth rug, which you can find here

8. Brittany Makes, made this AMAZING faux zebra rug (on a side note, can I please have all the pillows in this picture).

9. The next rug comes from 1 Dog Woof. Her crochet rug is made from repurposed tshirts! You can find it here

10. Okay folks, I definitely saved the best for last. I mean how can anything outdo a donut rug? This DIY donut rug from The House That Lars Built can be found here. Such a genius idea.

Friday Finds: Mid Century Modern Edition

I've always been attracted to mid century modern furniture pieces, so for my Friday Finds I thought i'd share a few of my favourites.

Today I just discovered Gus* Modern thanks to Elsie mentioning it on a Beautiful Mess here. What is even better is that Kesay design centre in Winnipeg sells Gus* Modern.

My two favourite pieces by Gus* Modern are the Atwood Sectional and the Wilson Cabinet

West Elm is also a great place to find mid century inspired furniture. I really love their Crosby 3 Piece sectional and their Parker Mid-Century Round Dining Table with Spoke Dining Chairs.

Oh and one day I swear I will buy the Saddle Office chair, i've been oogling the striped one for ages now.

Last but not least, I cannot talk about mid century modern furniture without mentioning Herman Miller and the Eames plastic chairs. I absolutely love the blue chair with the black legs.

Another favourite Herman Miller chair of mine is the Bumper guest chair

Anyways I hope everyone has a great weekend and Happy fourth of July to all my American Friends!
