Hello 2015

I know it's not 2015 yet but i'm pretty excited for the new year. I feel like 2014 was a fairly good year; I graduated university which is a huge accomplishment in itself. However i'm hoping to focus more on myself in 2015. I feel like that sounds rather superficial but I'm at a point in my life where I need to focus on myself and make time to do the things that I love. I'm starting to feel like if you don't love what you're doing you are just wasting your time. I'm not one for making New Years resolutions so i've decided to make the Rules of the Creative Mind my mantra for the year.

Anyways I hope everyone has a happy and safe New Years Eve! Cheers to 2015!

Public Service Announcement: Kitchenaid Mixer

Is it common knowledge that you aren't suppose to put the beater from Kitchenaid mixers in the dishwasher? Because I didn't know this and the dishwasher took off the finish. So now black comes off of it when I touch it.

So if any of you lucky folks get a mixer for Christmas, DO NOT PUT THE BEATER IN THE DISHWASHER. Please do not make the same mistake I did.

In other news my new mixer is still beautiful, I got the ice blue one as an early Christmas present!

High Five for Friday

Uhm how is it Friday already?? Where did the time go? Also how is it almost Christmas? This past week has been pretty nice actually, here are a few of the highlights:

1. My best friend came home for the holidays so i've spent quite a bit of time this week with her which has been lovely. We went for a sushi date earlier this week, which was delicious.

2. I started my Christmas baking this week by making peanut butter marshmallow square... I highly doubt that it will last until Christmas.

3. I'm STILL working on my boyfriends bedroom. I picked up a few shelfs at ikea this week and painted the brackets white. Things are slowly coming together.

(This picture was taken while painting so yes I realize it looks terrible).

4. Can we please talk about this hat from H&M. Also why didn't I buy it? (ps. I braved the malls this week... even though i'm done my Christmas shopping)

5. Last but not least I went to Tiny Feast this week... If you haven't been there you probably should check it out because it's such a great store. Anyways, I bought the best tote bag there. I wanted to buy this bag online at the Stay Home Club website but it was sold out so I was super happy to find it at Tiny Feast.

Anyways, I hope you all had a lovely week and I hope you have an even better weekend!

The Lil House's Holiday Gift Guide: DIY Edition

Hi folks! I'm not to trying to scare you but I thought you should know that there's only 11 days left till Christmas. Also, the malls are very scary right now. Now let's all take a moment of silence to appreciate the poor retail workers who have to deal with the mobs of crazy last minute shoppers. Anyways... if you want to avoid the malls and the crowds then this gift guide is for you! Here are my top ten DIY gift ideas:

1. This J.Crew inspired crystal flower lattice necklace by Bromeliad is the perfect gift for any gal in your life. Also while you are making your gal one please make me one too!

2. Teacup candles are also a great gift to give, you can easily buy old teacups at any thrift store... or just raid your grandma's house. Yes Missy has a tutorial that you can find here

3. Because I love candles so much I thought i'd share two candle ideas. Adventures in Making made these beautiful Pressed Herb Candles, which you can find here

4. I absolutely love this Terrarium Kit that Wit and Whistle made, i'd be thrilled to get this as a gift.

5. These tattoo ornaments are a super cute and easy project by Tattly. This would be a great DIY for children.

6. I keep seeing these Marbled Clay Ring Dishes all over Instagram that A Beautiful Mess made a few months back. They're a super easy and affordable project for anyone!

7. These Instagram Polaroid coasters are a very thoughtful gift... you could pick photos that are near and dear to the gift receivers heart. You can find the tutorial by HandiMania here

8. I may have squealed a little bit when I found this tutorial. I spend WAY too much money on Bath Bombs from Lush so finding this was like striking gold. Bath bombs are such a great gift for anyone who deserves a little pampering.

9. This DIY Mousepad by houzz is a great for anyone at the office!

10. Ok ok i've saved my absolute favourite DIY gift for last. I've been oogling Mandy's Giant Ombre Pom Pom blanket for a very long time, it's too adorable.

High Five for Friday

Happy Friday Folks! I hope everyone had a wonderful week. My week wasn't super eventful, but anyways here are my five favourite moments from this week:

1. I may have waited in a line for over an hour to get a picture of my dog with santa. But it was definitely worth it, and yes I will admit to being a crazy dog person.

2.  I've spent a lot of time this week reading Fall of Giants by Ken Follet. I borrowed it from a co worker so I feel inclined to read it in a short amount of time... little did I know that it's over 900 pages. I'm so glad that it's a REALLY good book.

3. Quite a bit of my time this week was spent at my boyfriend's house painting his room... yet I forgot to take any pictures! Oups.

4. My massage therapists office had the prettiest christmas tree in the waiting room. On a side note, I feel like I paid someone to beat me up for an hour.... It was so painful. Ow.

5. Last but not least, I bought a new candle from Bath and Body works (I may have a problem, I might have to seek help soon).

Whether or not your workplace does secret santa, it's always nice to give your favourite co worker a little something for christmas to show how much you appreciate them.

The Lil' House's Holiday Gift Guide: For the Hostess with the Mostess

Hello friends. It's official, i'm ONE present away from finishing my christmas shopping. If you are already finished your shopping I applaud you! And if you aren't finished your shopping then you've come to the right place because I am compiling a few gift guides over the next few days. I thought i'd start with a gift guide for hostess gifts. It's always good to keep a few of these types of gifts on hand just in case you get invited to a holiday party!

Lately i've been obsessed with cutting boards/ cheese boards. Etsy has so many of them, and they are a perfect hostess gift. Tunisia Hand Made has the most beautiful olive wood cutting boards, like this one here:

Another Etsy store that I love is Able and Game. I recently bought a bunch of their gift tags and cards for Christmas. A super cute gift idea is their tea towels which your could wrap a present in.

Another cute Etsy gift idea is from PLANT Brooklyn. They have a bunch of mini spice kits, like this Organic Italian Essentials Mini Spice Kit

Another thing that i've really been loving lately is scented candles. I bought a bunch to give away as presents... however I ended up keeping most of them. While places like Anthropologie have super nice candles, I am cheap so I tend to go for Bath and Body Works ones. I currently have 'Tis the Season, Champagne Toast, Merry Mistletoe and my all time favourite Peach Bellini. I really love the labels on this line of candles, they're very festive and they're two for $20.

Indigo also has a lot of great hostess gifts, like these beautiful Celebration Lowball Glasses:

If you happen to live in Winnipeg, pop into Jenna Rae Cakes and pick up her boxed macarons for $15. This is my favourite bakery, so i'd be over the moon if I got a box of her macarons as a gift!

Next, the 2015 Rifle Paper Co appointment calendar would be perfect for any busy body!

Last but not least, if you are short on time A Beautiful Mess has a few last minute holiday gift ideas here. I love their custom wine label, it would be the perfect gift to bring to any holiday party!

A Very Vintage Christmas Village

I know, I know, it's too early to be talking about Christmas. However winter just arrived in a BIG way this past week and while snow looks very pretty, it is terrible and cold (can't you tell that i'm not a winter person?). Anyways, for me the thought of Christmas is the only thing that gets me through the end of the year... and then the thought of Summer gets me through the rest of the winter. Lately i've been crushing on vintage christmas villages so I thought i'd share some inspiration.

First off, I came across these cute christmas village pieces on Etsy which are sold by MB Vintage Outlet... Can someone please buy me these?

Vitamini Handmade made these super cute Dip-Dyed Bottle Brush trees... which you can find here

If you need more tree inspiration, Fynes Designs made a bunch of neat trees here made these amazing Mid Century Modern house. I definitely need to make these... and there is even a pattern for them which you can find here.

I keep seeing these little Cars with Christmas Trees on them... they don't seem too hard to make... The Pink Couch made a super cute one.

Or if you are lazy you can just buy one at Target... I actually saw the camper ornament at Target this weekend and I was so tempted to buy it.

Anyways, that's all folks. I might actually attempt to make my own little village so i'll keep you posted on that!

The Spray Paint Chronicles

Hi my name is Jennifer and i'm a spray paint addict. Whenever i'm at the thrift store, I point out several items and say, "I could totally spray paint that and make it awesome". Which is exactly what I did with these cats. These cats weren't totally hideous to begin with and I debated keeping them grey... however I got over that pretty quickly.

I began with spray painting one outside, however it was way too cold and windy out. The paint kept dying too fast and the wind kept blowing the paper away (hence the extension cord keeping the paper down).

Anyways here is the end result. I'm hoping to use them as book ends one day. Not bad for a $4 thrift store find.
